Eastern or Great White Pelican
Pelecanus onocrotalus

Description
The White Pelican is a huge bird reaches heights of 55-70 inches. It is white with a long, flat, bright orange bill and black tipped wings. During the breeding season a short, yellowish crest appears on the back of the head and a horny plate appears on the upper mandible. Sometimes referred to as African White Pelicans, Roseate Pelicans, or European White Pelicans. These birds can be found throughout the eastern and central portions of Europe, in the northern part of India, Pakistan, and in Africa.

They are white in color, with a yellow bill and black wingtips. Their wing span is about 10.5 ft.

Biology
White pelicans are gregarious, usually travelling in flocks and nesting in colonies. 1-6 white eggs can be found on a low mound of earth and debris. Pelicans do not dive for food but cooperate to surround fish in shallow water where they scoop them into their ouches. In recent decades the number of white pelicans has dropped drastically because of the use of pesticides, human disturbance and the draining of wetlands.

Lifespan
12-14 years in the wild.

Hi Deborah

Lovely POV with the subject placed nicely in the frame. Excellent exposure, maintaining detail in the whites. Great detail too.

James

Amazing lighting Deborah. You definitely had your settings right.
Crisp focus and a beautiful POV. Sure looks great on the dark background. Been missing your photos...sorry.
Good day to you.

Hi Deborah,
A beautiful captured portrait of this pelican bad boy. He needs a comb and some hair styling gel :D. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hello Deborah,
This is a funny composition with great details and excellent control on exposure. I love this dark background which is much appropriated for this lovely subject. This is an original picture and your notes are interesting. Thanks,
Claudine

Hi Deborah,
It's different. Focus on the eye/beak and short DOF has softened the neck feathers losing some definition. Colouring is excellent and there is no burn out of the whites. I would have liked to have seen it in portrait mode showing more of the bill.
Best wishes,
Peter

Hello Deborah,
I really like this portrait!
It is very well framed from a different point of view, and the white plumage is captured with great details...
A well balanced composition, and my eyes are focused on the subject right away!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Deb,
Composition is subjective and the artist has free reign to create. Sometimes outside of the box works well..I posted a not-so-appealing toad headshot/extreme closeup awhile back, using nearly the same view from the side & behind..I like it :)

Are you sure this was taken in the Middle East?!
I don't think there's a London there.
Anyway,
the original POV is just excellent.
I gives a unique twinge to the photo.
Impeccable sharpness and detail.
Well done Deborah,
Joe

Hi Deborah,
This is a gorgeous pose!
I like very much this uncommon and original POV, with that dark background that stands out so well the white pelican.
I found so enjoyable the image, with the excellent eye detail and the top hair do.
Congratulations and thanks for share it.
My best regards,
JM

Hello Deborah

One bird's bad hair day is another's "expensive tease".
Just marking the post for now

Rob

Hi Debz, splendid portrait with superb details and excellent sharpness, great contrast against dark BG, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Debz,

I love it! A wonderful and artistic image of this lovely pelican. So dramatic with the black background. The punk hair-do is wonderful - as is the look in the eye. Excellent colors, details and pose.

Hello Deborah,
You offer us a great portrait !
The "+++++" : funny title, original composition, nice subject and great pose, POV, sharpness, DOF, good exposure of white, good contrast white / dark BG, instructive complementary note...
The "-" : nothing...
Good camera work and thanks for sharing,
Christian

The wonderful shape of the pelican against the dark background is so effective. I really like the concept of this shot. The crop may be just a tiny bit too tight at the top and right. It's just a personal opinion but I'd prefer that the plume didn't touch the edge. Exposure and sharpness look good to me.
