Rock Hyrax - Daman des rochers (Procavia capensis)

Order (Ordre): Hyracoidea
Family(Famille): Procaviidae
Height(Taille): 50 cm
Weight(Poids): 5 kg

The hyrax is so unlike other animals that it is placed in a separate order (Hyracoidea) by itself. It is said to be the elephant's nearest living relative. This is true to a certain extent, but misleading since the relationship stems from a remote ancestor common to hyraxes, sea cows (dugongs and manatees) and elephants. The hyrax, also called rock rabbit, is a small furry mammal. It looks like a robust, oversized guinea pig, or a rabbit with rounded ears and no tail.
The hyrax lives in small colonies in the rocks. The day it is heated by the sun by taking care not to be taken for target by the eagle, its principal predator. It is herbivorous.
It is not too savage and it approaches readily the houses such lodges. It is besides in this place that I could photographed our star of the day.

---------------------------------------------------------

Definitelly not, you're not an elephant ;-) Jean Patrick - another great animal and great photo! I like warm, desert colours on it. Cute mammal in nice pose ;-)

Hello Jean Patric!
What a cute photo in superb pose!!!
You made it just wonderful! GREAT shot!

Hi Jean, what a lovely shot. Your exposure is great, giving good colour and I like the composition. I think the DOF is a little narrow but it is perfectly sharp where it really counts and so that is a very minor nit. Lovely details in the coat. Great shot, TFS :)

I wonder if the elephant sends it a birthday card? :-)

Very nice shot. The composition and POV are very good and the warm colours are very pleasing. Very well done Jean Patrick.

Merci Jean-Patrick.
