Koppie Foam Grasshopper / Dictyophorus spumans

I hesitated for a long time if I should post an image of a grasshopper as I have sensed that grasshoppers and doves are not very popular on Trek Nature. Maybe I am wrong with this assumption, but going through the gallery I found that postings of these two types of creatures are not visited or critiqued upon as other kind of animals, insects, birds or what the subject might be. Whatever the reason I cannot really say, but I have decided to post this image after all as it is such a beautiful, large and brightly coloured hopper. It is known as Rooibaadjie in Afrikaans which means "red jacket" if directly translated. This image was taken during our holiday to the Cape Province in 2012.

Identification
Large (body length 64mm), bulky, familiar, with red and black body and legs, and abdomen banded black and white. Flightless, with short to very short reddish tegmina and no hind wings.

Biology
Like many in the family, extracts and stores heart poisons (cardiac glycosides) from the toxic and distasteful plants such as milkweeds on which it feeds, and exudes these when molested. Known to be fatal to dogs if eaten.

Habitat
Open, often rocky, areas with low vegetation. Frequently encountered on mountain tops.

Related species
There are 2 species in the genus.

Taken from the book: Field Guide to Insects of South Africa - by Mike Picker, Charles Griffiths and Alan Weaving. Published by Struik Publishers.

I hope you enjoy looking at this photo as much as I took pleasure in taking it.

Hallo Anna,
Wat een prachtige foto van dit Rooibaadjie. Schitterende intense en verzadigde kleuren, uitstekende scherpte en details en genomen vanuit een erg goed standpunt. Die oranje kraag is wel heel bijzonder.
Vriendelijke groet,

Hello Anna,
I for one am glad you decided to post this beautiful bold black and orange grasshopper. To me it's very dark contrasting colors gives him a sort of menacing look, as if to say "I'm the boss of this territory".
I would love to see what it looks like when it's wings are fully developed. Great post Anna, this is definitely a new grasshopper for me.
Ron
PS. I too used to worry about posting subjects that didn't seem to be very popular with other members, but then realized if everyone thought the same way, there would never be anything different to view:( You made the right choice:)

Sincerely, Anna, I hope it's not as you say. Well if so, then there is a very serious issue that we must resolve as soon as possible, on TrekNature. We can not allow something like that. I understand the spirit of this site is, in some way, a spirit that links photography, love for nature, the hunger to investigate the scientific aspects of the photographed specimens.

So I invite all my colleagues, not just criticize your current photo of this beautiful Dictyophorus spumans, where you've achieved a wonderful colorful, but declare, every one of us that will never be prejudiced by any living being (or natural landscape) .

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is very, very serious. And I do not think I exaggerate. Commit ourselves, with this dear; South African lady, that will never do something like that. Otherwise this site, so dear, would not be my home, at least for me.

Shalom Anna,

This is a beautiful insect, very well imaged. Glad you decided to show it, despite the expected low rating… Actually I notice that a good number of people liked it, too.

Cheers!

Ishi

Hi Anna, magnificent capture of this big grasshopper that i never seen before,a very useful post and an excellent pic with the usual perfect detail and bright colors,i like it! Have a nice evening and thanks,Luciano

Hi Anna, I thought grasshopper is always green in colour. Your grasshopper is with very special colours and it is very colourful too. Your have captured this creature with great details and nice light. Nice composition with great DOF. Thank for sharing
Anna

Dear Anna,
thank you for daring to drag one of those "not very popular" grasshoppers right on stage here at TN! If I were a curious dog I'd prefer not to look at one of those sizeable hoppers, indeed.
By having studied Treknature long enough myself, I should have also learned the lesson that a combination of flashy colours like the ones shown here means "poisonous", "stay away", "don't open the image", "don't leave a critique".
But - I can't help finding that image awfully attractive. Is it because the image is so flawlessly well made, clearly descriptive, inspired by curiousity and pleasure? Because the notes are so well written, brief and instructive? Or because you are using the same modest little compact camera as I often do?
Always a pleasure to see and to read your contributions, Anna. With thanks, and best regards,
Peter

Hola Anna, que belleza de insecto, lleno de colores extremos, me gusta el entorno, la composición y el manejo de la luz que no debe ser muy facil en este tipo de especies...saludos.

This is one grasshopper that I have never seen before, even in pictures. Wonderful natural colors and details are vivid in the frame. Excellent show and thanks for sharing.
