Crested Caracara, Polyborus plancus

CARACARAS:
The caracara is a bird of prey in the family Falconidae. Unlike the Falco falcons in the same family, the caracaras are not fast-flying aerial hunters, but are rather sluggish and often scavengers.
This is a bird of open country, which nests in a tree or on the ground, laying 2 to 4 eggs. It is 58 cm long with a 125 cm wingspan.
He has long legs and frequently walks and runs on the ground. The adult has a black body, wings, crest and crown. This species has bare skin around the eye that can change color in seconds. Sexes are similar, but immature birds have a brown back, buff neck and throat, and pale breast streaked with brown. The voice of this species is a low rattle.
The Crested Caracara is omnivorous, and will eat reptiles, amphibians and other small animals as well as carrion.

THE PIC:
Those birds were wild and numerous. They let you walk 10 m away from them. I like the pose of that one (despite I understand that there is not much detail in the pic). No tripod but camera stabized on a branch. Cropp 95%.

Thanks for looking.

Bonjour Jean-Marie,

Hi JeanMarie,
A very nice shot on this Crested Caracara. You handled the exposue in the bright light very well. The colors and detail look excellent. An interesting pose. I have only observed certain water birds do that to dry out. Nice shot.

Very interesting photo to see a bird do such a thing. I do see a lot of detail and nice color. Excellent exposure.

Great photo. I see water foul spreading their wings to dry all the time but first time for a land bird.
