Albania... or Shquiperia (as locals call it) - such a mysterious place... You don't see too much about it in TV, newspapers or even on TN. How many times I was thinking about visiting this country!? And finally this year I made it!!!

It was a journey through a country unlike any other in Europe, country full of picturesque places, interesting culture and open, friendy and extremely hospitable people!!!

In fact this picture I made during our last evening in Albania. And night before was undoubtly the hardest. We were far in these mountains in north-eastern part of the country. As usually in Albania the mountain road had no asphalt and was just one-car wide. Not even to mention it was winding a lot, on the left we had steep slope and on the right some 200-300 meter canyon. According to our map the road was just 35 km, but in Albania maps do not always say the truth.

Eventually it was getting dark and the rain came. Just some hours ago I got an sms from Greg (red45) who was at that time in Kotor, Montenegro (ca. 130 km away), about the heavy storms on the Adriatic coasts. In fact you may see them on his pictures. And clearly these storms were coming here as well. Our situation wasn't too good - absolutely no place to park the car off the road, and going such roads at night... well...

After some kilometers we have seen a mountain pass - a kind of a grassland saddle. Just perfect for a car and tents. The only problem was a high voltage powerline going above. But we had no choice... After some hours the storm really came and it was something I can tell my future grandkids about. The lightings were hitting the powerline and going down the wires. The light was so bright I could see almost everything through my tent. And the heavy rain simply flooded the grassland. Soon it appeared that the floor in my tent was pinched the night before so I was almost sailing on my sleeping matt. All keeping in mind the powerline and lightings. The storm lasted for some 3 hours. But it didn't stop raining later. We were quite devastated the following morning (see workshop 1).

And you know what - just when we got up, a highlander came out of nowhere with his old Mercedes and led us to a village bar for coffee and brandy to cheer up (see workshop 2)...

And the road appeared to be 78 km at the end.

The next night we spent on the coast of the Skadar lake, drying all our stuff, and observing that amazing sunset and stormy clouds raising again over these mountains...

Dear Michal,
my compliment for this marvellous moody, scenic picture. It is coming from another Albania traveller. From what geographical position did you take the shot? Your text deals mostly with weather and road conditions.
Cheers, Dietrich

Hello Michal,
This is quite an adventure that you lived; I think this is a great human experience! I really enjoyed those pictures in WS and this one is very nice. This place seems to be amazing. You caught excellent details and colors, this sky and lightning are just beautiful. Good exposure and POV too. This is very well done and interesting. Thanks,
Claudine

Hi Michal,
What a story to go with the stunning photo. Thank you for sharing it with us. It almost felt I was actually in the storm as well. Your photo shows the storm perfectly. Just amazing how it hugs this huge mountain and makes it look so small. The storm did bring you some stunning colors and shaped clouds.
I also appreciate the two additional photos, show the friendly people of Albania.
TFS,
Niek

Hi Michal!

Stunning, both of them! Picture is beautifull, it could be easily published in book about Albania. Great landscape with superb clouds, colours and light. Story is even better. It also could be very good in some kind of adventurers book. Albania must be great place and I'm really sorry that I hadn't time to visit it this year. But maybe in future...;-) Workshop pictures are also very interesting. Tough guys in bar. Nice car. And interesting pose on pictre with tents ;-)

Well that is really quite a tale, Michal! I have experienced lightening like that, and rain like that and "floating" tents like that and narrow roads like that but NEVER all at the same time. Sounds scary! I'm glad you made it through without mishap.

That is a really big thunder storm cloud that builds up over that mountain. Your photograph really conveys the size of it. I like very much the lighting in this photo. It is really well done. TFS'

Excellent presentation Michal with three great images to complete the information about Albania.

I like it a lot: composition, color, POV, lighting, DOF, focus, sharpness, framing, notes.

I don't like it: nothing to grumble.

Great post... thank you for sharing... indeed.

Hello Michal, well its a stunning capture.. The light is quite extraordinary here and there is great drama in the clouds. The small house at the bottom really gives scale to this. Really love to see a post like this on TN backed up by a great personal note plus WS. Very well done.
