Hello friends!

This shot I have uploaded as a complementary image to recent Radek's post. He gave a shot from the grassy bank of Lake Prespa and I decided to give you a broader view on the lake itself.

There are two Prespa lakes: Great Prespa and Small Prespa. The first is divided among Albania, Greece and the Republic of Macedonia, the second is shared only between Greece and Albania. The one you can see on my picture is the bigger one. It lies in the tectonic valley, and occupies an area of 274 km2. Its deepest part is 54 m deep.

When you look at this shot, the foreground and left banks are in Albania, the dark peninsula on the right is Greece and the high mountains in the back belong to Macedonia. The whole area remained more or less natural as for many years the Greek banks were military area which required special permission to visit. Naturally in Albania, during Enver Hoxha times the area was even more guarded... Then since 2000, for an abundance of rare fauna and flora, the area has been protected and declared a Transboundary Prespa Park.

Great Prespa Lake is very much unique.

First, it's one of the oldest tectonical lakes in Europe - it was created in Pliocene (nearly 5 000 000 years ago) by tectonic activities.

It's also the highest tectonical lake in the Balkans, being at an altitude of 853 m asl (2,798 ft). The lake lies only ca. 10 km (6 miles) to the east from Lake Ohrid - another tectonical basin about 150m below - interestingly the two lakes are connected with underground karst channels through which Prespa feeds the Ohrid Lake.

You may see both Prespa lakes (green colour) and Ohrid
Lake (blue colour) in this satelite image.

Considering the fauna, the most important are fish with 80% endemic species.

Since 1994 the strict natural ornithological reserve EZERANI has been promoted with its inclusion on the world Ramsar list.

Is it interesting enough to go there? I hope you don't doubt it is...

I will not tell any story about being there, as Radek did it already. I just would like to remark that this shot was taken while approaching the valley, late September evening - you may see some mist on the picture. Soon later it started to get dark. It's amazing how fast the night comes in the south. Next morning we had a better chance to go around the lake as far as we could and that was a very nice experience.

As a bonus shot, please see our camp in the morning :-)

Excellent note! Geography was one of my favorite classes. You have a way of making one wish he could visit...;-)
And, as for the picture: Very nice and excellent also! Good job of showing us this "broader view".
Great composition and POV!

Hi Michal,
There is so much beauty on this planet that no one can ever see it all in person. So we get to see and learn about places we may never get to thru other members that have. Another beautiful landscape scene. Well done technically. But it is also a lesson not only in geography, but history also.
Well done my friend,
Scott

Hi Michal.
What a great landscape picture you have taken. Amazing and excellent detailed view. Nice transition from water to cloudy sky. Attractive combination of shadowed and lightened parts of the captured scene. Colours are well saturated shot is perfectly exposed. Superb and pleasant for look work. I also like you nice note. Hi Michal

What a beautiful sight, my friend!
I must say (as i already told Krzysztof) that i somewhat envy but also admire you all for these fantastic trips you do!
I'm sure that you can tell numerous stories about these places and your road through there.
This is another beautiful landscape, with lovely colors and perspective. The composition is also wonderful and the nice, warm evening light is outstanding!

I also liked the photo from the WS - with a little imagination it looks like a Dakar shot (after the car and the dry landscape) :))

Bravo and TFS
