British Robin
Erithacus rubecula

Chats and thrushes (Turdidae)

The UK's favourite bird - with its bright red breast it is familar throughout the year and especially at Christmas! Males and females look identical, and young birds have no red breast and are spotted with golden brown. Robins sing nearly all year round and despite their cute appearance, they are aggressively territorial and are quick to drive away intruders. They will sing at night next to street lights.

An average of 1.4 per garden and a decline of 32% since 1979 put the robin at number 10 in 2006. In winter, some robins migrate from Europe to the UK, and the harsh European winter could explain the 7% increase in bird numbers this year.

They can be seen in woodland, hedgerows, parks and gardens.

When to see them
All year round.

What they eat
Worms, seeds, fruits and insects.

Hello Deborah,
Lot of details in your Robin.
Can be seen all year round; not the case for the English football team nowadays...:-)

Hello Deborah

I have heard about these birds often, and thanks to TN I feel as if I know them now.
My Dad is from Portsmouth and he told me about the British Robin when I was young, and he would recite the poem about "Who killed Cock Robin" to me.The North American Robin is a thrush and much larger. From the photos on TN I can see how these cute little birds can become so endearing.
You have composed the shot well, and the focus and details are sharp.
He is looking at you as if you said "OK ,look at me and give me a serious expression".

Hi Deb,
Excellent natural looking colortones, the bird is very well exposed..Great pose as he looks at ya, nice soft BG. Fine details. If I had to nit pick, I have to mark you off for losing that bit of foot bottom..sorry :)
Still, very well done!

Hi Deborah,

This is the second Robin I've critiqued today, but then it is the season of the Robin. This is a fine example, with great detail and nice natural colours. You have picked a great pov and the soft background is very effective.

Kind regards,

Superb close up with loads of detail, nice shot.

This is a bit different from our robins. I really like your capture of it.Nice DOF and the pose is so perfect.
It also has very sharp feather details.
TFS Deborah.

Great details and sharpness in this Robin. The DOF is wonderful with a great Bokeh. That 70-300mm isn't that bad. you work wonders with that lens. The British Robin is much different from the Robins here in the stats. Same colors but different in size and shape.

Hello Debz,
What a fine capture of the British Robin! Excellent sharpness and details of the plumage.Lovely colors. The POv and DOF are perfect. I see it is looking directly at you:)

bonjour deborah
j'aime le fait que l'oiseau regarde vers l'objectif, les couleurs sont parfaitement naturelles,je ne sais pas si vous avez accentué la netteté mais cela me parait un peu de trop.
en revanche le BG est parfaitement flou.

Dear Deborah my English friend,
This frame has a touch of a MASTER photographer.
I love birds, as you already know.
Our Robins, in Canada, are available only in Spring and Summer. They are slightly larger and redder of breast. The males are OUTSTANDING singers.
Friendly greetings, Mario from COLD COLD Calgary. -22*C this AM.

Hello Debz,
WOW... The detail is suberb and the colours are so delicately captured. BG and composition are excellent. Great photo of the UK's favorite bird. TFS

Hi Deborah,
Beautiful capture of this B. Robin!
I like very much the pose caught and the contact eye, it's like a portrait.
So enjoyable details and texture seen on its feathers.
Congratulations and thanks for share it.

Lovely vivid colours and great eye contact with you!

Hi Deborah,
"lookit" at that rascally robin "ain't" it a good looking little birdie! This is a nice capture of your little robin,a robin I must someday see with my own two eyes, maybe in the summer of 2008,time permitting that is.If I do get to England where in the old country would be the best area to photo wildlife? If I do not get to photo wildlife I surely will take photos of that iron bridge in Coalbrookdale as it appeals to me so.About your robin you have very nice detail and colour as well as sharp focus and the only thing I would change is the contrast to bring the little one out more, darken it up just a little. Thanks for this little robin, those birds have a softer look to them than our American Robins. Bob

Hello Debz nice sharp catch with great detail amazing at 1/25 sec tfs, Have a great New year Rgds Necip.
