Blue Tit
Parus caeruleus

Tits (Paridae)

An agile bird, the blue tit is most often seen flitting onto bird feeders. It is a small, sky blue and yellow bird with white cheeks and a dark eye stripe. In winter, family flocks of blue tits are joined by great tits, long-tailed tits and other woodland species, as they search for food. Its colourful mix of blue, yellow, white and green make the blue tit one of the most attractive resident garden birds. Almost any garden with a peanut feeder will attract them and they readily breed in nestboxes.

They will entertain for hours by hanging upside down from feeders, branches, etc. They are also opportunists and will often peck through foil milk bottle tops for the cream.

Blue Tits will nest in any hole in a tree, wall or nest box. They are well known for nesting in more unusual places, such as letter boxes, pipes, etc. The nest is a cup made by the female from moss, wool, dead leaves, spiders’ webs, and lined with down.

Their clutch size is the largest among nidicolous species, laying typically 10 to 12 eggs. The eggs are laid at such a time that green caterpillars will be abundant when the chicks hatch. Second clutches are rare.

The eggs are smooth and glossy, and white with purplish-red or reddish-brown spots. They are about 16 mm by 12 mm. The female incubates the eggs by herself. After the young hatch, they are fed by both parents.

When to see them
All year round. The Blue Tit is resident and does not usually wander more than a few kilometres far from its natal (birth) place.

What they eat
Insects, caterpillars, seed, nuts and in autumn, berries.

Hello Debz,
Of all the TN shots of the Blue Tit, this is one of the best. Not only is this sharp and with fine colours and lighting, but you have caught this one in a fantastic pose that shows up all the aspects of the plumage at their best. The composition and fine neutral BG help to set it off very well.
Well done and thanks,

Another beautiful little bird.I like the expression you have caught.he looks like he is intrigued by something on the branch.
Excellent focus and sharpness.
The lighting is very good and the colours appear natural .
The plumage detail is well defined, his feathers on his head look like a slicked back hairdo.

Hallo Deborah
You have a portfolio filled with a variety of wonderful photos, and this Blue tit is no exception. This is a lovely close up shot with very good and clear details. This is a real cute but elegant little bird, and the blue feathers on the top of its head gives a real "schoolmaster” look. I just love the granite coloured beak and the black stripe flowing through it's eye. I cannot find any mistakes. Composition is good. Charming and special photo. Congratulations! A well deserved smiley for this one. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
