[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I debated whether I would even post this shot as it might seem boring to some people, but hey I like it so it's up!

I don't normally shoot this kind of thing, though I really should do more because it definitely makes you think more creatively.

So, to the shot. I found this tree stump in Richmond Park, my hunting ground, and it had been felled. Not only were there deep natural carves of the tree - still showing the years of growth - but there were also man made marks of initials and phrases. These almost blend in together until you remember they were done with a knife.

The great contrast to my eyes is that of the tree with all its intricate texture and detail competing against the human marks and the fact that the tree is lying like this in the first place due to being felled: man vs nature.

Tree surgeons are often working in the park keeping the trees in check and felling those which may be hazardous. The deer pick off the lower part of the trees which leaves a level canopy.

Different and pretty effective... though not "eye catching". Might pay off to dodge the darks down a little to bring the shadows out a little more and give it a little more impact, though that's a purely personal view.

I like it a lot. I think more people should try seeing beyond the things with obvious beauty. Good shot overall.

Hi Simon,
Very artistic shot. Rich textures of the wood and natural formations contrasts so well with the man made markings. Human beings have always tried to sabotage nature and this is another example. The colour hues make it look so beautiful. Very nicely composed and framed. Kudos.

I would give you credit for this daring shot, Simon. A tree felled quite some time ago ends up having this kind of look on the sawn off side of its stump -- weather beaten, discoloured and cracking at the points where its age is represented by each circular layer.
Man-made carvings on it are well assimilated into the general texture of the stump and do not stand out to jar one's senses.
Well, that's nature for you, in a different sense altogether.

WONDERFUL DETAIL CAPTURED!!!! Oh my...yes...I too find this a very interesting shot. The composition, color and clarity are perfect along with a nicely done frame. Taking more of these kinds of photos really does open your eyes to the possibilities.....Thanks!
