This picture was taken at night, in an abandoned room (by people!) filled to the brim with these bats, in the Kalakad-Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve - a biodiversity treasure in the mountains of south India. I can guess that it is a species of leaf-nosed bat, but I dont know the species. Ahmet, other TNers over to you!

There is very little comprehensive information on the internet about this group as such (from my limited search). As far as I know, they have some specialised, leaf-like structure around their nostrils that enhances echolocation. They are typically insectivorous.

Hi Ravi
Perfect capture of this wonderful bat. TFS. Regards, Bahadır

Hi Ravi,
Great shot with amazing details on this one. Some noise in the photo and there is an edge of a rock on the top most part of the photo that is shining out a little and is distracting.
I have done a workshop and tried to fix the noise and that edge on the top. See if that's how you would prefer it to be or not.

Overall I liked the detailing of the face where you can see the very prominent nose and ears. A very unusual bat!

Hello Ravi,
many thanks for this excellent dedication, this is one of the best gift for me. Perfect details, great POV and composition. Eyes contact and coloriton also great. This is a member of the family Hipposideridae - Old World leaf-nosed bat. Formerly this family was regarded as a subfamily of Rhinolophidae. This bat belongs to the genus Hipposideros. But I am not sure its species, without investigation in details. There are 12 Hipposideros species in India, maybe more. Your (Oriental region) fauna elements very different from those in Palaearctic (North Africa and Eurasia except for SE Asia)Region. Yours is relatively close to Africa (Ethiopian Region) fauna. Additionally some species very close each other. I will search my document for its exact species.
Thanks again. best regards from Turkiye

I noticed this fine and appropriate tribute to our TN chiropterist, Ahmet.
This is a fine portrait of this species of bat, the head an front part being sharp and seen from an excellent POV in fine lighting.

Hi Ravi,
Cool shot of this bat, your flash has revealed excellent details in the face. Very interesting creatures, and not often photographed/seen here on TN.

Hi Ravi,
This is a stunning capture! I never had the chance to see one during day time... When I was in Mont-Tremblant national Park lately, I witnessed a very impressive moment. At dusk time, thousand of bats came out from the wood and went flying over the lake to capture insects. This was a moment that I have never seen before; they were so many coming from nowhere! This is a nice POV with good details and composition. I also like this DOF which creates a nice effect. I would have removed noise from the background but it is minor nit :) Thanks,
Claudine

We have bats flying around our house at night and I would love to be able to get a picture of one. I generally think they are cute furry creatures but yours is a little scary looking up close. Thanks for the great photo and info.
Eileen

Dear Ravi,
Fascinating animal, and I add it to my theme "Nature's Oddities"

In these difficult circumstances you did a great job to present this mammal.
Thanks for sharing,
Nice Sunday,
Ingrid
