Arctiidae family (Tiger, Lichen & Wasp Moths)

subfamily Arctiinae (Tiger Moths). The Virgin Tiger Moth has been listed as Apantesis virgo in some field guides.

Identification: A Large moth. Hindwings and abdomen are reddish orange with black "tiger" spots. Forewings are black with white lines superimposed on the wing veins. Wingspan: 45-70 mm.

Life History: One brood, hibernates as larva. Black caterpillar with many nodules of short brown spikes in rows.

Host Plants: Willow (Salix spp.), clover, lettuce, and plantains.
