Hi all!

Schist, and not Flysch for a change... Schist is a metamorphic rock that comes in almost infinite variety, but its main characteristic is hinted at in its name: schist comes from the ancient Greek for "split," through Latin and French. Schist is a rock formed by dynamic metamorphism at high temperatures and high pressures that aligns the grains of mica, hornblende and other flat or elongated minerals into thin layers, or foliation.

From the artistic point of view, schist, as I encountered it in the Kanton of Obwalden (Balmeregg), offers quite interesting photographical approaches. The colours are totally different from the ones one can notice in the Flysch and vary from black to almost white by passing through silver... all depending on the composition and the angle of the lightfall.

My wife and I were on a little hiking tour under quite changing and difficult weather conditions. I took advantage of a short sunny moment to take some pictures of the schist. I also was surprised to find - just beside the black parts - wonderfully coloured pieces of rock. Maybe I will present some in one of my next posts.

Let your imagination go and dive into these delightful colours and shapes!

Taken in RAW, basic postprocessing in Camera RAW (levels, colour balance, contrast and sharpness), import to PS and final postprocessing.

Kind regards

Lieber Markus,

You are a gifted "rock" man, Marcus, and whatever your clever eyes notice is bound to be a thing of beauty. These Schist rocks look beautiful in the arrangement you have captured them in.
Well done and keep them coming.
Best regards.

Hello Markus,
Another wonderful piece of Art from your end! It's always magic to let ones eyes wander across these patterns and to admire nature's work. The colours here are very beautiful and all parts very sharp and lovely.
Many thanks and have a nice weekend, Ulla

Super geology lesson. I was looking for a bit to see if there were any hidden images in the rock but your notes explain it well.

I like the patterns/textures I see Markus. They combine with the color variations here to make a fine image. The "schist" itself earns great interest, and your notes tell the story nicely..Not only in "geological" terms, but in "human" terms that invite the viewer to take an intimate look..
Very well done!

Hello Markus

Ciao Markus, an other wonderful abstract composition from you, excellent sharpness and wondeful texture, very well done my friend, ciao Silvio

Dear Markus,
