[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I don't usually take pictures of squirrels since they are so overdone, but this little Fox Squirrel assumed this strange pose when he heard me take a picture of a mallard at the San Antonio, Zoo. I couldn't resist the curious look and the way the "hands" are held in front of the chest. It reminds me of a guilty fidgeting, thus the title.

The squirrel is an uninvited zoo resident - they are quite common on the zoo grounds stealing food from the animals cages.

Fox Squirrels are quite common in the south central United States. They are actually less common on the east coast.

This squirrel shows is a good example of the unusual vagaries of taxonomy (the science of naming animals). The common name, Fox Squirrel, refers to the orange underparts and orange tipped tail hairs. This differentiates it from the Gray Squirrel which shares much of its range, which has gray underbelly and tail hair tips.

The scientific name, on the other hand, Sciurus niger, means Black Squirrel. This name is a historical artifact from the fact that the first specimens discovered were mostly black - an uncommon color phase restricted to the eastern parts of its range. So the scientific name "black squirrel" was put on this squirrel which is generally brown and orange over most of its range. Oops!
