Burrowing Owl
Northern Burrowing Owl
Athene cunicularia hypugaea

Scientific classification
Kingdom: Animalia

Phylum: Chordata

Class: Aves

Order: Strigiformes

Family: Strigidae

Genus: Athene

Species: A. cunicularia

The Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia) is a small, long-legged owl found throughout open landscapes of North and South America. Burrowing owls can be found in grasslands, rangelands, agricultural areas, deserts, or any other dry, open area with low vegetation (Lewis 2005). Unlike most owls, burrowing owls are often active during the day. However, most hunting is done at dusk or at night.

Burrowing owls are able to live for at least 9 years in the wild and over 10 years in captivity. They are often killed by vehicles when crossing roads, and have many natural enemies, including badgers, coyotes, and snakes. They are also killed by feral and domestic cats and dogs.

Diet
The highly variable diet includes small mammals, small birds, snakes, lizards, frogs, insects, and scorpions. But the owls mainly eat large insects and small rodents. Although burrowing owls often live in close proximity to ground squirrels, they rarely prey upon them. Unlike other owls, they also eat fruits and seeds, especially the fruit of tasajillo (Opuntia leptocaulis) and other prickly pear cacti. When hunting they wait on a perch until they spot prey. Then they swoop down on prey or fly up to catch insects in flight. Sometimes they chase prey on foot across the ground.

Bonjour,

Bonne journée.

Wow ! I love it ! All those owls sitting there together and watching you watch them, how wonderful ! You could not have asked for a better grouping... are you sure you didn't pick them up and put them in place and tell them to "STAY!"?

Excellent POV and composition. Your cropping was very effective; clarity, detail and DOF are all fine.

Thanks for sharing.

hi rick!

great situation in
nice lighning and with
fine pov!
very well done!

Hello Rick,

Excllent colors Bg POV DOF of this lovly family, excllent composed and capture photo . Nice work

TFS Kyle

Superb capture what I really loved was that all of them have a different expression, you could almost name by their expressions. They look so human in their differences. That is what I think is the true wonder of this picture. For eg. the small one second from front looks so innocent, the third from front looks a bit tough, the taller one right behind it looks quite confused and the one right at the back has a sort of maternal caring expression. well that is what i see in it I wonder what others will find.
Best regards

Pari

Hi Rick ,

Bellissime queste 5 civette delle tane,
peccato sia un po' sfocata.

Wow a family sibling portrait! Try reducing the midtones a bit and increase the highlights/ shadows to get more detail and make it "pop" a bit more, but looking at the WS'es I see someone beat me to it. Good job Rick!

Hi Rick

This is a splendid capture! WOW! 5 in 1...what a gorgeous family portrait!
I know how difficult it was to capture one...i can't even imagine how it would be to go for 5...LOL
The POV is really great here and the fact that you caught them all looking your way is outstanding! Now this is indeed some serious eye-contact :))
The details and very nice and clear, the colors are terrific and the exposure spot-on, too.
Congratulations for this terrific job!

Bravo and TFS

Rick, I remember this choir!!!

What a fantastic shot! And a super presentation. No ifs ands or buts. Great presentation in this focussed nestlike setting! Warms the cockles! The expressions in the eyes of the two leftmost owls is too funny. Thanx, eh! Jay

PS The points scored on this shot when compared to the first one says a lot about how you have moved along fabulously! Again, well done! < No WS here ;) !!! >.

Hola Rick.- Hermosa postal la que hoy nos presentas aqui. Gran nitidez, luz, contraste. Me agrada la mirada de estos pequeños "Buhos". Felicidades Luis52.

Hi Rick, such a charming quintet of little owls. This is what it is all about, getting the kind of shots that make people see just how wonderful nature well and truly is.The field of depth is very narrow so all are not quite in focus however that takes nothing much away from this gem of a picture in my opinion, well done! Bob

Fantastic capture! They are so lovely! All looking at you! Great eye contact and nice details. Very well done!

Hi Rick,
So excellent! I stopped by when time was scarce yesterday and marked this one as a favorite. My wife did a needle-stitch several years ago as my young family was growing. It was of a family of owls like this and the caption said, "We always have room for more"...;-) My mother-in-law has said, Two is enough for anyone!", but she has not told me which three of my five to toss back...;-)
I'll be surprised if I don't run across this one on a card someday. Excellent composition. Beautiful subject! And, Great work!

Well, My goodness! Five at once. That is just too special. It may be a little soft but those eyes all seem sharp enough...and they are all looking at ME! Ralf's workshop seems to have sharpened them up a bit. This illustrates great luck or skill or both. Thanks for sharing.

Evelynn : )

Hi Rick

Awesome group shot. Love how they have posed for you and made perfect eye contact. :-)

Wow, amazing shot! I realy love owls and i never saw so many in a single place.
Congratulations!

This is the sort of shot one dreams of taking.I like the way the vegetation intrudes - it says this is real life.

Hello Rick!
I just found this nice and funny photo in your archive :)
This is really "family" picture :) Nice pomposition, good details - especially well seen in your worshop which for me is better than original version :)
It has also a very good saturation and sharpness, and the note is interesting and informative :)
TFS and best regards,
Radomir

Nice shot! Good composition.
