Cuckoo Wasp
Stilbum cyanurum

Do you still remember the just missed theme Callie introduced a while ago?

Cuckoo Wasp, common name for a group of mostly small, stinging wasps. Cuckoo wasps are brilliant metallic blue, green, or reddish in color. They are parasites that lay their eggs in the nests of bees, wasps, and certain other insects, which are called their hosts.

Cuckoo wasps are only seen occasionally due to their small size and secretive habits. However, in open, sunny habitats they are often abundant on flowers and small shrubs, where they feed on nectar. Cuckoo wasps often lurk near the burrows of their hosts, waiting for an opportunity to sneak in and lay an egg. They have a thick, hard cuticle (outer covering) that is covered with pits. The cuticle provides protection from stings and strong biting mandibles of host insects, which may attack the cuckoo wasp. In addition, the underside of the abdomen is concave and allows the wasp to roll up into a protective ball, another defensive mechanism. Although cuckoo wasps sting, their stinger is very small.

Cuckoo wasps can be divided into two chief types based on their lifestyles: parasitoids and cleptoparasites. Parasitoids feed on the larva of the host and cleptoparasites "steal" the host's food. In both cases the host larva dies. The food-stealing behavior of cleptoparasite species resembles that of the cuckoo bird and gave rise to the cuckoo wasp's name. Hosts of parasitoid species include bees, sphecid wasps, potter wasps, sawflies, silk moths, and the eggs of stick insects. Cleptoparasitic species feed on provisions of sphecid wasp nests, which may include dead spiders, true bugs, aphids, or thrips.

I found this critter on the curtains this morning. I could not get nice photos because of the environment. When I left for the computer it followed me to the other room and sat on the pation door. Lucky!

Amazing macro shot,
Excellent capture full of colors.
Details and dark background are superb.

Great picture with very good quality, the reflection is a great bonus, I think if you could keep the whole reflection in the frame it would be better.

Hello Gerhard,
Brilliant macro shot showing sharp details of this brightly coloured wasp. Good idea to turn the picture - now he's really admiring himself! A pity you cropped a bit off the bottom but even so a great composition!

Brilliant macro,Gerhard!
You have captured this Cuckoo Wasp super sharply and show its colours at its best. Personally I would have kept to the vertical to show how it can get a grip on glass, but that would spoil the theme!
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Hi Gerhard,
wow - that's realy wonderful, I love the mirror-effect and the excellent sharpness.
It's not easy to make good shots of metallic insects, sometimes the reflection is too strong. Congrats, you did a perfect job

Hi Gerhard

This is realyl a splendid macro capture of this interesing wasp.
The magnification and definition of every detail and texture here are simply outstanding!
The colors and the metallic reflection are also fantastic and the reflection impeccable...what more to add...perfect is all aspects!

I'm sure Callie is a bit gelous :))

Cheers and TFS

Sorry for slowness of reply, I've been away.

This photo is just amazing! The reflection of this fly is the topping on the cake, it seems as though he checking himself out. The colours are very vivid and show up well due to the flash. I think composition and POV are great, as is the background which does not show any other reflections or distractions which is impressive.

Very cool shot!

Hi Gerhard

Great shot, the reflection of the wasp really balances the image well and the macro on this is superb. I was wondering whether it might have been possible to remove some of the ghosting in the reflected image by using a polarising filter, then you wouldn't have the second reflection being cut off at the bottom of the frame.

TFS & Cheers

Excellent capture Gerhard,
It's what macro dreams are made of :)
Needless to say, the reflection is awesome, and takes the shot to higher plane...
Very well done.

Excellent capture of this beautiful wasp.
I do remember the theme from Japie and almost forgot your post, but came to my ming when I opened :)
This is a very beautiful and artistic post. I like it as it is, but I would not mind to see more at the bottom to get both reflections into frame.
Best regards, MF.
