Hi guys,

I'm sorry to just drop a photo in and run, I will try and do some critiques before I go. Assignments coming out my ears I'm afraid so I'm off to the library! When the heat is off I promise to fill up my quota of critiques.

On to this photo, my first ever of a Robin believe it or not! He was quite tame and was jumping around a bin looking for anything tasty. The lens used was the 70-300 and I managed to get a very soft background using just f5.3, no other work was done on the shot other than a slight crop and sharpen. I am very impressed with the noise level at ISO 800 without even having to apply Neat Image.

Here is some information about the Robin from my new RSPB book:

This is a typical forest or woodland-edge species in most of its range, adapted to follow foraging animals such as wild boar. In the UK, it follows gardeners turning soil, and has become remarkably tame. In most of continental Europe, Robins are much shyer birds. Robins are easily identified (although juveniles have no red at first)and have a distinctive song.

Hi Simon

What a splendid robin close-up!
I relly like the low-angled POV you had here and also the very beautiful pose you caught it in - with its head turned to you and giving you that charming eye-contact.
The details are gorgeous and the colors are lovely and well saturated.
I must also remark that the DOF is simply impeccable and it isolated the subject perfectly from the BG.
The exposure is spot-on, the framing is very nice and the composition is superb, too.
Is that you i see there in that small reflection in its eye? ;))

Bravo and TFS

hi simon,
very impressive capture of robin, the pose captured is very nice, looks like the bird is lookin in to the lens,
well saturated colours, nice pov, the blurry bg has isolated the bird from the surroundings,

Hello Simon
Wonderful picture with wonderful sharp details. Excellent colors, lighting, DOF and composition.
My compliments and TFS.

Robins always photograph well... they always look so endearing. Only criticism would have to be the concrete that he's stood on, but we can't have everything...

Hi Simon

A beautiful wee fella we have here. Nice pose and the catchlight is perfect. Nice low POV with perfect colours. :-)

Your first robin has done you proud. You have managed very well DOP, sharpness and focus. Colors are awesome too! nice one!

hi simon!
congrat too your first
one on this beauty!
sharp with fine pov
and good composition
well done!

Great shot. You are so lucky with the Robin. that is one of the advantages of living ina city - in the countryside wher I live they are a lot harder to get close to would you beleive it!

It is a great shot of him/her and your composition is excellent. I am amazed at the lack of noise at ISO800, but sometimes the camera can surprise us.

Good luck with the course deadlines and TFS

Hi Simon,
Magnificent capture of this Robin!
You got a so crisp and razorshar image of him.
I like all details on the plumage.
It's very good the composition and the eye contact.
I like so much the DOF used and the way you put the background away.
I'm impressed also for the 800 ISO and no noise visible.
Congratulations and thanks for share.
My best regards,

This is a beautiful capture of this cute bird Simon. I love this DOF, great eye contact, colors and details. I wish we have this bird here too but I made up my idea about it now... Congratulations for this first very good capture. He has a very lovely pose too :) Thanks,

With ISO 800, it is a miraculous feat not to get even the faintest noise in this lovely first picture of Robin from you, Simon.
It is a great picture in every respect.
Don't let your job too much in the way in your creative pursuits!
Best regards.
