[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Hey guys,

Something a little different today! After looking through TN I noticed there aren't many photos of rats. This is probably because they are difficult to photograph, aren't that nice to look at, and aren't always in the nicest environments!

This specimen was located in London Zoo's BUGS area and this rat was in an indoor display with a sea theme discussing the history of rats at sea and the disease they spread.

This chap was not diseased! His friends were all asleep and he was moving around and suddenly jumped up to this tankard and started drinking from it. Think this is a first on TN, a beer drinking rat?!

My lens was not really suitable for low light and it was hard to get this shot. I was using ISO 800 and a a shutter of 1/15!!! Was literally holding my breath to keep as still as possible. This was the only one that came out sharp enough what with him constantly moving.

In Photoshop I cropped, removed the noise and sharpened.

I have just purchased a 50mm f1.8 which would have been far more suitable in this situation, next time eh!

Tipsy rat. A nice novelty indeed, Simon. You must have pretty steady hands as it looks sharp enough to me. Great composition, too. May I ask what WB setting you used? TFS

salut Simon,
une image originale que l'on ne voit pas souvent effectivement. La qualité n'atteind pas des sommets mais l'image à la mérite d'avoir été prise dans un environnement original.

Hi Simon,
Good effort for what seems like challenging conditions. The exposure looks good and the compo is strong. On my monitor there is a colour cast that has been introduced by the white balance being fooled. Try reprocessing with a tungsten setting or flouro setting to see if the colour is more natural. I use Capture NX and find that the white balance control is way better than Adobe Capture RAW. You can download a 30 day trial from the Nikon site.

Hi Simon

Good pose. Considering the difficulties a good shot - it isn't too sharp, but that would be virtually impossible at that speed.

I am not that found of rats - my house has river frontage so they are always around - if you look - but I have never thought of photographing them.
