[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I took these pictures last sunday in Chuao, a small village famous for its cacao plantations where some of the finest cocoa beans in the world are produced. It’s located in the northern coastal range of Venezuela.

The village is surrounded by mountains and dense rainforests in its south side, and by the Caribbean Sea on its northern side; there are no roads to access the site, thus I got there by small boat from the neighbouring village Puerto Colombia-Choroní.

The aroma and flavor of the Venezuelan cacao are unequalled and mark the difference when choosing a chocolate.
In other manufacturing chocolate countries, they add a percentage of Venezuelan cacao to improve the quality of the product.

This composition shows two stages of the cacao pod and their tiny flowers.

All pictures handheld with Image Stabilizer (IS), about 10 am, good weather.
Copped, contrast, resized for TN and sharpen.

Cacao (Theobroma cacao)
Cacao (Theobroma cacao) is a small (4–8 m tall) evergreen tree, native to the deep tropical region of the Americas; It is today cultivated throughout the tropics. Its seeds are used to make cocoa and chocolate.
The bush is today found growing wild in the low foothills of the Andes at elevations of around 200–400 m in the Amazon and Orinoco river basins. It requires a humid climate with regular rainfall and good soil. It is an understory tree, growing best with some overhead shade. The leaves are alternate, entire, unlobed, 10–40 cm long and 5–20 cm broad.
The flowers are produced in clusters directly on the trunk and older branches; they are small, 1–2 cm diameter, with pink calyx. The fruit, called a cacao pod, is ovoid, 15–30 cm long and 8–10 cm wide, ripening yellow to orange, and weighs about 500 g when ripe. The pod contains 20 to 60 seeds, usually called "beans", embedded in a white pulp. Each seed contains a significant amount of fat (40–50% as cocoa butter). Their most important active constituent is theobromine, a compound similar to caffeine.

Interesting fact:
The scientific name Theobroma means "food of the gods". The word cacao itself derives from the Nahuatl (Aztec language) word cacahuatl, learned at the the time of the conquest when it was first encountered by the Spanish.

Una presentación que merecería estar en un buen fichero de especies. Todos consumimos este preciado fruto pero poca gente conoce realmente la planta y el delicado proceso de producción del cacao.
Las tres fotos son claras y detalladas y muy descriptivas con riqueza de detalles. La presentación muy cuidada también.
La próxima vez di que se trata de una planta salvaje, no vaya a ser que se entere alguien y te borren un post tan bonito :)
