I am back from New Guinea - as if you had not guessed!!

This Papuan or Blyth's Hornbill was probably hand reared as it was hanging around a village. This species holds a special place in Papuan New Guinea. To most tribespeople, killing one of these equates to killing a person ,however, they were headhunters and the bills of these birds do figure prominently in costumes. Even so, the birds are not killed indescriminately, so they have a 'sort-of' protection.

The Papuan Hornbill, Aceros plicatus also known as Blyth's Hornbill, or Kokomo in local language, is a large, approximately 91cm long, hornbill of forest canopy. The male has golden tan colored head, black plumage, reddish brown iris, pale blue orbital skin and white tail. The female generally is an all black bird with white throat and tail. Both sexes of young birds resemble the male. Adults has up to eight folds on pale casque, while the young has none.

The Papuan Hornbill is occurred throughout lowland forests of the Moluccas, New Guinea, Bismarck Archipelago, east to the Solomon Islands. The only species of hornbill native to New Guinea, it also one of the largest flying birds of the area. The diet consists mainly of fruits, insects and small animals.

Widespread throughout its large habitat range, the Papuan Hornbill is evaluated as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

New Guinea, located just north of Australia, is the world's second largest island, having become separated from the Australian mainland when the area now known as the Torres Strait flooded around 5000 BC. The name Papua has also been long-associated with the island. The western half of the island contains the Indonesian provinces of Papua and Papua Barat (formerly West Irian Jaya), while the eastern half forms the mainland of the independent country of Papua New Guinea.

At 4,884 metres(16,023 feet) , Puncak Jaya (sometimes called Mount Carstensz) makes New Guinea the world's fourth highest landmass.

Hi James
Very good composition, nice OOF buckground (but maybe you could blur it a little bit - gaussian blurig). Sharpness is good. I think that you could also reduce the higlights a little bit. I like your image very much and it is taken in natural environment!
Best wishes

James,Excellent and lovely I like this shot very much. lovely beak and great eye catch. Ganesh

Hi James,
You had to be really close to get this photo. Was it a wild shot or in a bid park? The lighting in this photo is most wonderful and highlighted the wonderful colored head perfectly. I like the side profile from his back a lot. It shows the huge bill perfectly.
