Hello - heading back home shortly. Today I have scanned slide taken in 2002 of a Lilac Breasted Roller - I think the BG helps this shot a lot.

The Lilac-breasted Roller, Coracias caudata, is a member of the roller family of birds. It is widely distributed in sub-Saharan Africa and the southern Arabian Peninsula, preferring open woodland and savanna; it is largely absent from treeless places. Usually found alone or in pairs, it perches conspicuously at the tops of trees, poles or other high vantage points from where it can spot insects, lizards, scorpions, snails, frogs, small birds and rodents moving about at ground level. Nesting takes place in a natural hole in a tree where a clutch of 24 eggs is laid, and incubated by both parents, who are extremely aggressive in defence of their nest, taking on raptors and other birds. During the breeding season the male will rise to great heights, descending in swoops and dives, while uttering harsh, discordant cries. The sexes are alike in colouration.

This is stunning. I like the beautiful colours you have captured on the bird, the muted background which complements the bird and an unusual perch which is just a little bit different.

Hello James,
Another excellent photo of one of my African favourites. Colours, sharpness and specially the composition is fantastic. Very beautiful end of the branch. A little bit noisy in the BG. But for a scanned slide it's amazing. Great POV.

Hello James , Fantastic picture ,super colours sharpnes and details great pov bg and interesting note ,tfs Greetings Teunie .

Hi James

This is just too lovely for words. The way the bird is perched, the camera work, the colour of the bird vs the colour of the BG, the total atmosphere of the shot, everything just gave it a certain elegance (panache if you wish) which makes it very pleasing on the eye.

The simplicity of the composition is beautiful as it is only the bird, the branch with the leaves, and the exceptionally contrasting background. If there is one small suggestion which I could make though it would be to crop it a little more at the bottom. I prepared a fun workshop with this slightly modified view and I hope you like it.

Well done and TFS.

Hi James,

It is a good photo. The colours are very assorted. I like composition and details of this roller. Nice work.

All best regards, Cezar T.
