[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Cacyreus marshali Butler, 1898
Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae
Common name: Geranium bronze
Geranium bronze is native of South Africa. It has, however, been introduced (deliberately or accidentally) to Mediterranean Europe (initially the Balaeric Islands), where it has spread as a pest of cultivated Pelargonium geraniums, which also originate in South Africa. It was first recorded in the United Kingdom in Sussex in 1997 (also on geranium), and has been recorded several times since. In the UK, all sightings should be reported to DEFRA. It appeared in Malta on March/April 2007. The first location that established itself was at San Gwann but in a few months took all over the island. Recently it has also been spotted in Mġarr, Xagħra, Gozo and in Katerini. Spotted on Crete 2 September 2016.
The caterpillar feeds on cultivated Pelargonium geraniums, as well as on species of the related Geranium genus. |

Hi Nikos, nice decentralized composition, maybe most decentralized but it's still an excellent capture of this small lycaeneide very common in my country too. Have a nice day and thanks,Luciano
Hello Nikos,
Once I captured this species here in South Africa and Luciano helped me to find out its ID.
Excellent BG! Good details and colour. Just too close to the right frame, otherwise a good picture.
Have a nice WE,
Regards,
Srikumar
Hi Nikos,
What lovely patterns!! The details & the colors are wonderful; a bit of crop would have definitely helped.

Hi Nikos,
The leave is helping to frame the butterfly. The point of view is showing the details of the Cacyreus marshalli butterfly. The light is enhancing the colors. Have a nice day.
