[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Amazon Milky Frog (Phrynohyas resinifictrix) is certainly one of the more photogenic of the new world Hylid frogs. I was lucky to get a chance to photograph this captive specimen at a reptile and amphibian expo in San Antonio, Texas. This striking coloration is typical of juveniles only, adults fade to a less contrasty gray and brown.

Frogs is this genus secrete copious milky white toxins from their skins when handled (I have a picture at http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v689/charrison/Panama/Herps/phrynohyashand.jpg that shows what happens after just a few seconds of handling its congener P. venulosa). These toxins are secreted to deter would-be predators. They are poisonous and undoubtedly give the frog a very bad taste as well as making them unpleasant to handle.

The common name and specific epithet of this species reflect those secretions (resinifictrix = "resin maker").

These young captive frogs didn't offer that sort of defensive response, thank goodness. Unlike a lot of other frogs, many of the tropical treefrogs are quite patient and tolerant of having their photos taken and pose quite nicely!

This photo was taken at the expo with the frog sitting on a plant in a vase on a table. I used a KM 3600 HS-D flash on camera with a Stofen Omni-bounce diffuser.
The image was cropped slightly, resized, and a little USM was applied in PS Elements before the border was added.
It was really intended to show the striking colors of the frog and wasn't intended as to look like a field shot.

A milky frog, the name is really fantastic for this amazing creature! And really good! :>
According to the picture I have to say that there are a lot of things which I like in this presentation. They are:

1. composition - very nice clouse up, but fortunatelly we can easy see all important details of frog's body

2. colouration - colours are well saturated, vivid and beauty (even if the species is not very colourful tones make a great mosaic on amphibian's skin)

3. sharpness and DOF - just correct, all details perfectly visible

4. note - informative and interestive, just like every note should be

So summarizing - very interesting presentation of poorly known creature. I am waiting for the next pictures from your collection! :)
