[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a freshly hatched larva of the butterfly Lasiommata megera (Nymphalidae, Satyrinae). In this stage, the larva of Lasiommata and closly related genera (Pararge, Kirinia) possess rather long 'hairs' (setae). In later stages, after several moultings, they look quite different: body and head are usually green covered with only short setae. This newborn is about 3 mm long. The first meal is the own egg shell. Then, until pupation, they feed on grass. Obviously, this caterpillar has taken up a small amount of grass visible by the slight green colour of the segments. Books on butterflies almost exclusively (if at all) figure the adult caterpillars making identification of first or second instar larva extremely difficult.
