[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I photographed this Checkered Gartersnake (Thamnophis marcianus) on a quiet country road south of San Antonio, Texas, USA.

Checkered Gartersnakes are very common residents of the arid southwestern US and south into southern Mexico. They are usually found near water where they eat amphibians and small mammals. They are harmless and usually very docile animals, rarely offering to bite even if picked up.

Their gray-green heads stand out from the yellow and black checkered bodies. The bright red tongue provides even more stark contrast to their otherwise sombre coloration.

This individual was lying on a paved country road at night soaking up the warmth of the road surface. It didn't try to leave when I approached it with a flashlight and allowed me to take these photos from less than 5 inches from its head.

Wow, that is quite a close-up, Chris.
Superb details and good lighting to show off the beautiful markings and colors. This is an unusually handsomne garter snake.
A great capture. TFS. : )

Hi Chris, great portrait with amazing colors and details.

Nothing more to say except perfect

Beautiful image with crisp detail and lighting. Not unlike our native Natrix natrix but they do not have the red tongue pigment and have a yellow instead of black stripe behind the head. Great work, excellent capture.

Excellent close up
Great details and sharpness, good eye contact.
Well done

A very beautiful close-up of a very beautiful snake, Chris. I love the POV, colors and the detail is magnificent. I would definately be curious in a picture of all the animal, if you say it has such nice colors.
A very big Bravo and thanks for sharing.
