Well Willie this is an unusual looking bird it has beautiful markings throughout. The focus is a little softer than usual but thats the limitation of the camcorder. Interesting read and overall a good post.

Hi Willie, I'm not an expert on these matters, but I wasn't sure of the ID on this one and did a bit of research. This does look a lot like a juvenile heron,but after comparing all the images I've browsed,I wondered whether this might not rather be an American Bittern.
I feel a bit cheeky suggesting this after Callies confirmation (I'm not even from South Africa) but have a look at some Bittern pics on Gooogle images, then let me know what you think.

Not using the usual comments about the quality of the video camera I think it's a very good shot. The composition is excellent and I love the pose of the bird.

Less common is an understatement. I have never seen one before. Robert's states it as "uncommon" in central "Old" Transvaal, common in Limpopo area. Great shot Willie. And it's a Juvi...

Interesting bird: looks a bit like our green heron. I red notes about your cam and your job. First I hope you get a job as soon as you can. Second I hope you will be able to get a better camera to shoot your already very good pictures.
