HAMERKOP ( Family Scopidae – Scopus umbretta )

Size: +/- 56cm

Description. : A plain brown bird with bulky looking body and short black legs. It’s backward projecting crest and moderately long black bill gives rise to a hammerhead appearance.

Habits: On the large African lakes, it flies to deep water and hovers briefly before diving from about five metres above the water to snatch surface swimming fish. It also feeds on frogs and tadpoles.
The hamerkop is known for the huge dome shaped nest that it builds in waterside trees or overhanging rocks from sticks, grass and mud gathered on the shoreline of rivers and ponds.
Barn owls or Egyptian Geese often usurp the nest before the rightful owner can use it.

Usually a silent bird, it sometimes utters a nasal ‘wek….wek…’ which may develop into a drawn out, high pitched ‘ wek..wek..warrrrrk’

The Hamerkop is not related to storks.

The Hamerkop here, posed for about ten minutes for me. In all this time he hardly moved, as if I was not there only 20 ft away. I got some 40 shots that were good. In only one of these shots, did he pose with his neck extended so that you can see his complete hammerhead, but I'll post that shot later.

Hope you enjoy.

He is thinking! I find the stump on the left a little distracting, maybe you did not have an option? Otherwise the positioning is fine.

Great shot Willie.
It's amazing what you can do with your 1M pixels video cam.
Great pose, composition, colours and details.
Very well done.

Again a wonderful shot from you Willie. Good details and POV. I do agree with Nico that the tree in the left is somewhat distracting. Was it too big to clone out?

Lovely shot Willie, it's a shame that wood is there at the left but apart from that it's an excellent composition and hte details are great for that camera. Very well done.

Another amazing shot from the camcorder. This one is nice and sharp, almost as good as any of those pesky EOS 300D shots that the experts use.
I like the pose and the environment. Good composition, well done.

No way this is from a video-cam. :)

This is a razor sharp capture. Excellent pose and POV. Nice natural BG. My only nit is the branch on the left. But thats nature. Great shot Willie.

Fantastic shot Willie, great details, I can almost count his feathers.

Oh my what a pretty bird, he makes brown look quite fashionable! His feathers are so clear and sharp, and the reflections in the pool are interesting. Very nice bird, thanks for sharing him.
