Willie, Overall a good shot..I think these were not the best conditions to try out your camera with bad light..I think the right light is the first & foremost factor in photography...It looks like your camera may have tried to focus on the sprigs in front, not sure..Anyway, Good luck with the new camera! TFS

Hi Willie
Nice first picture. You have to watch where it focuses. Since the "film" is cheap, place a tin, toy, whatever in a tree, then shoot a couple og shots at different f-stops, and compare in the PC - not on the camera. This will let you see where the focus catch on. For this birdie, you needed abit less f-stop, but this will come.

Willie, thank your wife. As for dealing with the camera, as time goes by, you'll show us great pictures, just like you've been doing.
Nice first shot with your new camera. The pose is great and, despite the soft focus, it is a nice picture.

As for the camera, it's a very good choice. I'm very often impressed by Luc's shots quality; The lens long focal will be a great help for these kind of shots. Question of getting used to it and spot the right focus point when distracting objects interfere. Seems it's what happened here, the focus being on the fore branch. Sure there will be many occasions to share with us S.A. beauties with the same framing expertise and curiosity for nature you've shown in your former shots. Callie's comment is very useful. Have fun, Willie!

Good first post with the S1, Willie. Look for my today's post: Snowy. It seems you focused on the little branch in front on the bird. I think that at f/8 with a monopod it would do the job better, but with bad lightning I am not sure.
Complete note.
Thanks.

The lightening is a bit strange but the scene is very well captured. The POV is great and so is the composition.

Nice bird, a pity that the picture quality is so bad.

Hi Willie, congratulations on your birthday and a big thanks you to your wife for getting you this new camera, after you get better weather and get used to it I think the results will be leaps and bounds ahead of the video camera.
Under the conditions this is very nice, well done...I can't add more than Callie and the others have said.

Based on other shots on this site using the S1 IS, I'm sure you'll produce some stunners in the very near future. This one is a bit soft, but still quite good for a samll bird. Well done.

Welcome to the Canon camp, Willie. :)
From what I have seen Luc do with this camera I can't wait to see you get the hang of it. I was just as frustrated when I moved from my 1st digi-cam to DSLR, what an adjustment, hang in there. :)
Congrats on the new camera, thank the wife from all of us here, I am certain it will be to our benefit as well.

Congrats on the new camera - I always enjoyed your "videos" and will watch with interest to see if the new camera shows technical improvements. As always, leaving technique aside, a really good capture and an excellent note.

Tones, colors are really impressive. I like the design of the photo, it is really strong to emphasize the mood of it.
