The Ruby-throated is the only species of hummingbirds we have here in Ohio. This is a male and is the first to return each spring to establish territories around nectar rich flowers.

Both male and female are very protective of their territorial range and will not hesitate to chase off intruders. They will at times dive bomb their advisories in a display of aerial antics that would make even the best of aircraft pilots envious.

This is a photo of a male who was one of our earliest visitors this spring. I love to sit out back and listen to their tweeting sounds and buzzing wings as they visit our feeders.
